Diamond Princess launched from shipyard

NAGASAKI, Japan - Diamond Princess, one of the largest cruise ships in the world, is launched May 25 in Nagasaki Prefecture. The 113,000-ton vessel, 290 meters long and 41.5 meters wide, is designed to be environment-friendly, featuring diesel engines releasing lower amounts of pollutants.

            CHIBA, Japan - The 320,000-ton Tubarao Maru, one of the world's largest bulk iron-ore carriers, is open to public view during a naming ceremony at Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding Co.'s shipyard in Ichihara, Chiba Prefecture on Aug. 5. The carrier, which measures 340 meters in length and 60 meters in width, will be used to ship iron ore from Brazil to Japan for Nippon Steel Corp.

              FUKUOKA, Japan - The ''Super Eco-Ship'' tanker Nadeshiko Maru, an environmentally friendly vessel that is driven by electric motors, was launched in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture on Sept. 11. The 749-ton oil tanker, built with assistance from the Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology Agency, uses a contra-rotating propulsion system driven by two electric motors, with electricity supplied by four generators. Compared with diesel engine ships, the design supposedly improves energy efficiency and reduces the emission of carbon dioxide by about 10 percent.

The 14-deck vessel, one of the world's largest luxury liners, was launched last May as the Diamond Princess but a fire occurred Oct. 1 when the ship was undergoing interior work at the shipyard.
