Salvage ship heads for East China Sea to raise 'spy' ship

YOKOSUKA, Japan - Photo, taken from a Kyodo News helicopter, shows a salvage vessel cruising from Yokosuka port, southwest of Tokyo, on June 22 toward the East China Sea to raise an unidentified ship that sank there after a shoot-out with Japan Coast Guard patrol boats in December 2001. The 657-ton Shintatsu Maru carries an unmanned submersible vessel.

Salvage work begins on fishing boat 5 months after sinking

NAGASAKI, Japan - The Daiei Maru No. 11 (C), with a fishing net covering half of its deck, is pulled up to the surface by a crane ship from a depth of some 80 meters off Hirado Island, Nagasaki Prefecture, on Sept. 22, 2009, where it sank on April 14 while heading to the East China Sea. The salvage work is being conducted with hopes of recovering the remains of 12 crew members who went missing in the accident.

Human jawbone found on N. Korean spy ship on display

TOKYO, Japan - An object that appears to be part of a lower human jawbone was found on the salvaged North Korean spy ship on display at a Tokyo museum and may have belonged to one of the crewmembers, the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) said on Dec. 17. The item was found by a staff member who was doing anticorrosion work on the ship that sank just about two years ago in the East China Sea off Japan after a shoot-out with JCG patrol vessels.

Stranded N. Korean freighter dismantled

HITACHI, Japan - The Chilsong, a 3,144-ton North Korean freighter stranded off the port of Hitachi, Ibaraki Prefecture since December 2002, is seen dismantled in a photo taken from a Kyodo News helicopter on June 14. The alleged spy ship sank about 390 kilometers off Amami-Oshima Island after a shoot-out with Japan Coast Guard ships on Dec. 22.
