2 ships leave Kitakyushu for salvage work on sunken vessel

KITAKYUSHU, Japan - The 2,474-ton Koyo Maru (foreground) and the 493-ton support ship Wakashio Maru leave Moji port in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, on July 4 to salvage a suspected North Korean spy ship which sank in the East China Sea after a shoot-out with Japan coast guard patrol boats last December.

      KITAKYUSHU, Japan - The Japan Coast Guard survey ship Kaiyo heads out to sea from Moji port in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture on Sept. 11 to take part in a joint Japan-South Korea radioactivity survey mission in the southwestern region of the Sea of Japan, including waters close to the disputed Takeshima island, or Dokdo in Korean. The mission, which will last until Sept. 18, is intended to study possible impact of radioactive wastes dumped by the former Soviet Union and Russia.

        KITAKYUSHU, Japan - The Japan Coast Guard and the Indian Coast Guard conduct a joint exercise in the sea off the city of Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, to deal with pirate attacks on ships on Nov. 18. The drill was conducted on the assumption that an Indian patrol vessel had received a distress call from a cargo ship attacked by pirates in open waters near Japan.

          TOKYO, Japan - An object that appears to be part of a lower human jawbone was found on the salvaged North Korean spy ship on display at a Tokyo museum and may have belonged to one of the crewmembers, the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) said on Dec. 17. The item was found by a staff member who was doing anticorrosion work on the ship that sank just about two years ago in the East China Sea off Japan after a shoot-out with JCG patrol vessels.
