Chinese ex-forced laborers survey ruins of Nagasaki coal mine

NAGASAKI, Japan - Li Qingyun (C), a 77-year-old former Chinese forced laborer, sails around the Hashima Island, southwest of Nagasaki, on July 27 to survey the ruins of a coal mine on the island. About 1,000 Chinese were forced to work in four coal mines in Nagasaki Prefecture, including one on Hashima Island, during World War II.

Memorial service for wartime Chinese forced laborers

KUMAMOTO, Japan - Liu Guangyao from the Chinese Consulate General in Fukuoka reads a message from Li Tianran, the Chinese consul general, at a memorial service in Arao, Kumamoto Prefecture, on Oct. 14, 2012, held for Chinese people who died as a result of forced labor during World War II at a Japanese coal mine.

Team examines Koreans' remains

NAGANO, Japan - Members of a research team examine remains in wooden boxes on July 20, 2011, in Omachi, Nagano Prefecture. The team from the Japanese and South Korean governments is researching the remains of Koreans who were taken to Japan for forced labor during World War II. After the examination, remains of four people, including that of four-year-old who died in 1944, were confirmed in the probe aimed at returning them to their families.

Ashes of WWII Korean slave laborer returned to daughter
