New Ehime Maru launched

IMABARI, Japan - A new Ehime Maru fisheries training vessel is launched in a ceremony in Imabari, Ehime Prefecture on Aug. 10 to replace its predecessor, sunk in February last year in a collision with a U.S. Navy submarine off Hawaii. The boat belongs to the Uwajima Fisheries High School .

                  Fishing boat cut in two, capsizes after collision with freighter

                  OSAKA, Japan - A 4.3-ton fishing boat is cut in two and capsizes after colliding with the 6,395-ton Panamanian freighter Mighty Dandy in the Seto Inland Sea off Kagawa Prefecture on May 7. Two people on the fishing boat were thrown into the sea, and one of them -- a 46-year-old woman -- was missing. The skipper of the fishing boat was rescued by a Japan Coast Guard vessel which happened to be near the scene, officials said.

                    TOKYO, Japan - Makoto Toyoda, chief lawyer for relatives of two of the nine people who died in the sinking of the Japanese high school fisheries training ship Ehime Maru in 2001, tells reporters in Tokyo that he and his group of lawyers are asking the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) to investigate the accident. The ship sank after a U.S. Navy submarine collided with it off Hawaii.
