Columnist Hanaoka abandons bid for Nagano governorship

NAGANO, Japan - Former Sankei Shimbun editorial writer Nobuaki Hanaoka (L) shakes hands with lawyer Keiko Hasegawa at the Nagano prefectural government head office in the city of Nagano on Aug. 14 after his announcement to retreat from the Nagano gubernatorial election. Hanaoka, who had earlier this month announced his intention to run in the Sept. 1 election, said he will give full support to Hasegawa to run against former Nagano Gov. Yasuo Tanaka.
