Street smokers in central Tokyo to face 2,000 yen fine

TOKYO, Japan - Cigarette patrol wardens collect cigarette butts at Kanda railway station on Oct. 1 after Chiyoda Ward in central Tokyo implemented an ordinance to fine street smokers and butt throwers 2,000 yen. Wardens will only issue warnings to offenders during October and the fine will be enforced from Nov. 1.

    TOKYO, Japan - Alberto Stucki (R), whose wife and daughter were killed in Miyazaki in 2004, hands a petition with 80,000 signatures to Justice Minister Kunio Hatoyama at the Justice Ministry on Nov. 2, asking the government to set up a sentence of life imprisonment without parole. Stucki, 51, a resident of Kyoto with dual Italian and Swiss nationalities, has been taking issue with the Japanese penal system in which most inmates sentenced to life in prison are later released on parole. Stucki's wife and daughter were burned to death in May 2004 after a burglar broke into their home, stole 550,000 yen and set the house ablaze. The burglar is serving a term of life in prison.

      TOKYO, Japan - The House of Representatives special committee on support for Iraqi rehabilitation passes a bill on Oct. 18 to extend an antiterrorism law another year to allow Japan to continue refueling U.S.-led coalition vessels in the Indian Ocean. The special antiterrorism law, due to expire Nov. 1, was enacted in October 2001 after the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States that year. The legislation was extended for two years in October 2003.

                TOKYO, Japan - A bronze sculpture commemorating the courage of Lee Su Hyon, a 26-year-old South Korean student who died Jan. 26 in a bid to rescue a man who had fallen onto to railway tracks, is unveiled July 1 at a Japanese-language school in Tokyo's Arakawa Ward where he was studying. Lee and Shiro Sekine, 47, a Japanese photographer from Yokohama, died while trying to save a man who had fallen onto the tracks of a JR station in Tokyo. Lee's parents, Lee Song Dae (L, background) and Shin Yoon Chan (next to Lee), joined the unveiling ceremony.

Knock Yokoyama step down over his involvement in a high-profile sexual harassment case. His accuser, a 21-year-old college student, earlier in the day increased her demand for compensation to 15 million yen from 12 million yen. Yokoyama, 67, chose not to challenge her demand during the final hearing of the case at the Osaka District Court in October.
