Shinagawa offer may end debate on fate of empress's old home
TOKYO, Japan - The debate of whether to demolish or preserve the former home of Empress Michiko (in file photo) has likely reached a conclusion as the Finance Ministry considers an offer made Nov. 12 by Tokyo's Shinagawa Ward to buy the land after the house is demolished and develop the lot into a park. The property was turned over to the ministry in 1999 in lieu of an inheritance tax payment following the death of the empress's father Hidesaburo Shoda.
