7 arrested for fraud over bracelets touted as improving blood flow

CHIBA, Japan - Three types of metal bracelet which a Tokyo health appliances company allegedly sold by claiming they help blood flow have no health benefits, police say. Chiba police on Nov. 6 arrested Minoru Kajimoto, the company's president, and six former employees on suspicion of swindling 18 people out of 6.8 million yen by selling them the bracelets. The police believe the company took in some 2.45 billion yen by selling the bracelets to roughly 8,200 people in 40 prefectures from January 2004 to April this year. The bracelets in the photo were shown to the media at the Kamagaya police station in Chiba Prefecture on Nov. 6.

Consumer lender Aiful ordered to halt operations at all outlets

The Financial Services Agency ordered the major consumer finance firm to suspend part of its operations at all of its nearly 1,700 outlets nationwide for up to 25 days in May, saying it has carried out illegal lending practices.

Motorcyclists steal 75 mil. yen from money transport vehicle

TOKYO, Japan - Police investigate a robbery site in Tokyo's Ginza district Dec. 20 where two men stole a bag containing about 75 million yen from a money transport vehicle (C). One man drove a motorbike (in front of the vehicle in photo) in the vehicle's path to make it stop, while the other man broke the glass of the vehicle's rear window and grabbed the bag of cash from the back seat. The two sped away on a different motorbike, the police said.

Mitsui bribes Mongolian official to win aid contract

TOKYO, Japan - File photo shows the head office of major trading house Mitsui & Co. in Tokyo, which bribed a ranking Mongolian government official in 2001 to secure orders for a Japanese government-financed power project. Sources close to the case said Aug. 28 employees of Mitsui, including Yusuke Shimazaki, 39, offered more than 1 million yen to a director general-level official in charge of power and energy management at Mongolia's Infrastructure Ministry.

Police arrested Fumio Sasai, head of real-estate company Yazaki Sangyo, on suspicion of possessing numerous packs of bogus Mild Seven Lights and Seven Stars cigarettes, brands sold by Japan Tobacco Inc.

Regulators question head of lender suspected of gouging

The Financial Supervisory Agency and the Finance Ministry's Kinki Regional Finance Bureau on Nov. 2 question Nichiei President Kazuo Matsuda over allegations the company has strong-arm tactics to recover bad loans. Matsuda denied the allegations, sources close to the case said.
