Remote-controlled robot operates power shovel

TSUKUBA, Japan - A human-shaped remote-controlled robot operates a power shovel at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, on Dec. 19. The robot, jointly developed by the institute, Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. and Tokyu Construction Co., is expected to play an active role in restoration work at disaster-hit areas.

                      TSUKUBA, Japan - A government institute and a private-sector company said Sept. 19 they have jointly developed a humanoid (photos) that can lie down and get up on its own. The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, which developed the robot with Kawada Industries Ltd., said it has created the world's first robot capable of rising by itself, overcoming a major weakness in previous robots that cannot rise on their own.
