Demolition of empress's former home begins
TOKYO, Japan - Work to demolish Empress Michiko's former home in Tokyo's Shinagawa Ward began Jan. 16, despite strong opposition from local residents. The 70-year-old, Western-style wooden building was handed over to the Finance Ministry in 1999 after the death of the empress's father Hidesaburo Shoda in lieu of an inheritance tax payment.
