Mitsui Engineering succeeds in test operation of NGH plant

ICHIHARA, Japan - Photo shows a test plant Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co. built in Ichihara, Chiba Prefecture, for reducing natural gas to a sherbet-like state and then returning it to a gaseous form, a process that will reduce transportation and storage costs. The company said Feb. 10 it has succeeded in the test operation of the plant, which is capable of producing 600 kilograms of natural gas hydrate (NGH), a chemically stable crystalline substance that resembles sherbet, a day.

                    TOKYO, Japan - A tanker carrying about 67,000 tons of liquefied natural gas docked at an LNG receiving terminal in Sodegaura, Chiba Prefecture, on April 6, marking the arrival of the first shipment of LNG from Russia's Sakhalin-2 project. Tokyo Gas Co. and Tokyo Electric Power Co., which jointly operate the LNG storage facility southeast of Tokyo, will share in shipments equally, with the gas company supplying the LNG as town gas and the electricity firm using it as fuel for its thermal power plants.

                      CHIBA, Japan - The 320,000-ton Tubarao Maru, one of the world's largest bulk iron-ore carriers, is open to public view during a naming ceremony at Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding Co.'s shipyard in Ichihara, Chiba Prefecture on Aug. 5. The carrier, which measures 340 meters in length and 60 meters in width, will be used to ship iron ore from Brazil to Japan for Nippon Steel Corp.
