N.Z. in need of Pied Piper to resolve rat dilemma
SYDNEY, Australia - Resembling something out of the German folktale Pied Piper, New Zealand's government may be forced to find new home for an island population of Polynesian rats if indigenous Maori people want the rodents moved rather than killed. The Polynesian rat, or Kiore, were bought to New Zealand from Polynesia by early Maori settlers more than 1,000 years ago as a food source.
