Matsushita unveils electronic book

TOKYO, Japan - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. on July 2 unveils an electronic book device (photo) that can store text and images from printed books and show them in black and white on two built-in liquid crystal displays. The Sigma Book weighs roughly 550 grams and is about the size of A4 paper when opened. Matsushita plans to put the e-book on the market as early as this fall with a price at the 30,000 yen level.

Panasonic to launch e-book reader on Aug. 10

OSAKA, Japan - Photo shows the UT-PB1, an e-book reader handset to be put on sale by Panasonic Corp. on Aug. 10, 2011. The Japanese consumer electronics giant said July 22, 2011, that the handset, with a price tag of 34,800 yen, can only be purchased via Panasonic's web store. Matsushita to release new compact massage chair Jan. 1

OSAKA, Japan - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. said Nov. 13 it will release a compact electric massage chair (photo) that is about 30 percent smaller than its flagship model ''Real Pro'' for sale in Japan on Jan. 1. The new massage chair, ''Urban I,'' is 110 centimeters high and the base measures 74 cm by 107 cm. Matsushita puts the suggested retail of ''Urban I'' at 230,000 yen, about half the price of the ''Real Pro'' model.

Matsushita expands Viera TV lineup

TOKYO, Japan - Seven new models of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co.'s popular large-screen, flat-panel Viera televisions are displayed at a presentation in Tokyo on Aug. 9. Six of the models are plasma TVs with full high-definition specifications, ranging in size from 42-inch to 65-inch screens. The remaining model is a 37-inch liquid crystal display TV, also with full HD specifications.

Matsushita to launch world's largest plasma TV in Japan

TOKYO, Japan - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. said it will begin taking orders on Sept. 1 for its newly developed 103-inch plasma TV, which is the world's largest flat-panel TV, for delivery on the Japanese market. The made-to-order TV unveiled at a pres conference in Tokyo on July 19 has a panel measuring 2.3 meters by 1.2 meters and is expected to retail for 6 million yen (about $51,000).

Matsushita to launch digital single-lens reflex camera in July

TOKYO, Japan - Held by a publicity assistant at a press conference in Tokyo on June 21 is the Lumix L1 digital single-lens reflex camera which Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. will launch in Japan on July 22. The product, which Matsushita has developed in cooperation with camera maker Olympus Corp., is expected to sell for about 250,000 yen.

NTT DoCoMo to launch ultra compact mobile phone

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows what is claimed to be the world's smallest Internet-capable mobile phone which NTT DoCoMo Inc. will launch on the Japanese market on July 1. Measuring 9 centimeters by 4 cm by 2 cm, the handset, called Premini, weighs only 69 grams, NTT DoCoMo said on June 24. It will carry a price tag of about 15,000 yen.

Kojima to release appliances jointly developed with GE

TOKYO, Japan - Kojima Co., a large-scale discount retailer of home electronics, said June 25 it will release on July 18 a refrigerator and two other appliances (in photo) jointly developed with General Electric Co. (GE) of the United States. The 320-liter refrigerator, free of environmentally harmful chlorofluorocarbon, will be offered for 128,000 yen, Kojima said.

Matsushita, Toshiba to set up LCD firm in Singapore

TOKYO, Japan - Toshiba Corp. President Tadashi Okamura (L) and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. President Kunio Nakamura pose at a news conference in Tokyo on Feb. 23. The two companies said they will set up a joint venture in Singapore in March to manufacture low-temperature polysilicon liquid crystal display (LCD) panels used in video mobile phones and other digital appliances.
