Matsushita to release new compact massage chair Jan. 1

OSAKA, Japan - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. said Nov. 13 it will release a compact electric massage chair (photo) that is about 30 percent smaller than its flagship model ''Real Pro'' for sale in Japan on Jan. 1. The new massage chair, ''Urban I,'' is 110 centimeters high and the base measures 74 cm by 107 cm. Matsushita puts the suggested retail of ''Urban I'' at 230,000 yen, about half the price of the ''Real Pro'' model.

Matsushita unveils longer-lasting alkali batteries

OSAKA, Japan - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. unveiled on Jan. 15 what it says is the world's longest-lasting alkali battery. The battery, to be sold under the brand name ''Evolta,'' lasts 20 to 50 percent longer than Matsushita's current alkali batteries, the company says. Evolta will be sold in Japan from April 26. An triple-A ''Evolta'' pack will be priced at just under 600 yen, about 20 percent more expensive than current Matsushita alkali batteries.

Matsushita to sell world's 1st Blu-ray DVD recorder-player

TOKYO, Japan - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. will market the world's first Blu-ray DVD recorders with replay functions on Nov. 15 in Japan, the company said on Sept. 20. The DMR-BW 200 and DMR-BR 100 will have a suggested retail price of about 300,000 yen and 240,000 yen, respectively.

Matsushita to sell vacuum cleaner that detects allergy-causing dust

OSAKA, Japan - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. said April 4 it will put on sale on May 1 in Japan a new vacuum cleaner (in handout photo) that can detect and remove pollens, ticks and microscopic allergy-causing dust. The cleaner, aimed at consumers sensitive to dust, has a sensor that can detect dust as small as 20 micrometers, and it has an indicator that remains lit until such dust is fully vacuumed, the company said. The cleaner is expected to sell for around 65,000 yen.

NTT DoCoMo to launch ultra compact mobile phone

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows what is claimed to be the world's smallest Internet-capable mobile phone which NTT DoCoMo Inc. will launch on the Japanese market on July 1. Measuring 9 centimeters by 4 cm by 2 cm, the handset, called Premini, weighs only 69 grams, NTT DoCoMo said on June 24. It will carry a price tag of about 15,000 yen.

Matsushita unveils electronic book

TOKYO, Japan - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. on July 2 unveils an electronic book device (photo) that can store text and images from printed books and show them in black and white on two built-in liquid crystal displays. The Sigma Book weighs roughly 550 grams and is about the size of A4 paper when opened. Matsushita plans to put the e-book on the market as early as this fall with a price at the 30,000 yen level.

Matsushita unveils cleaning robot

OSAKA, Japan - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. unveiled a prototype cleaning robot on March 25. The box-shaped robot, which weighs 9.8 kilograms, cleans rooms while avoiding furniture and other barriers. Matsushita will begin tests on the robot at homes in May so as to introduce a practical model in a few years for about 500,000 yen.
