Sri Lanka farmers dream of making riches mining gems

RATNAPURA, Sri Lanka - Off-season farmers work as part-time miniers in Ratnapura, some 100 kilometers southeast of Colombo. Two miners dig in a clay bed of a dark and stuffy cave about 15 meters under a rice paddy at Pelmadulla near Ratnapura. The photo was taken by Dadahiro Nishiyama.
