YOKOHAMA, Japan - The glass door of the Fujisawa branch of the Hana Credit Union is seen broken July 31. Police suspect that someone apparently threw a Molotov cocktail at it in the latest attack on Korean establishments in Japan.

Man admits to smuggling drugs into Japan by U.S. military mail

YOKOHAMA, Japan - One of two American men arrested by Japanese police has admitted to smuggling illegal drugs (shown in photo) into Japan using the U.S. military mail service, investigative sources said Aug. 6. The confession was made by Babe Cole, who works for the U.S. Navy base in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, to the Kanagawa police. The other suspect, William Jenkins, a former base employee, has denied the allegation, they said.

Police to arrest ex-Mitsubishi execs in wheel death case

TOKYO, Japan - Kanagawa prefectural police investigators enter the head office of Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corp. in Tokyo's Minato Ward on May 6. Police obtained arrest warrants for seven former Mitsubishi Motors Corp. executives suspected of making false reports on vehicle parts defects in connection with a fatal accident in Yokohama in 2002.

Bomb-like object found near Korean-operated bank in Niigata

NIIGATA, Japan - Police are mobilized July 30 to remove a bomb-like object near the Niigata branch of Hana Credit Union, a local bank with ties to North Korea. The Asahi Shimbun received a call July 29 from a man who told the newspaper that a gunshot had been fired at the Niigata office of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon) and a bomb placed at the Korean bank.

YOKOHAMA, Japan - Police officers check a park in Zama, Kanagawa Prefecture on Nov. 19 where explosions believed to be a guerrilla attack aimed at the U.S. Army's Camp Zama occurred the previous night. Police said they found a projectile launcher, a metal pipe about 55 centimeters long and 5.5 cm in diameter, at the west side of the park.

Minor nabbed after bashing strollers in Tokyo's Shibuya

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows a street in Tokyo's busy Shibuya district, where a 17-year-old high school student allegedly bludgeoned strollers with a metal baseball bat on the evening of Dec. 16. The boy inflicted minor injuries on at least seven people. The boy, from Yokohama, allegedly conducted the attack at around 9:05 p.m. on a pavement outside an exit of Shibuya Station of East Japan Railway Co. Police said the minor appears to be mentally unstable and may not be able to assume criminal responsibility.

Credit Suisse Japan unit gets license revoked

TOKYO, Japan - Hakuo Yanagisawa, chairman of the Financial Reconstruction Commission (FRC), speaks at a news conference July 29 on his decision to revoke the banking license at one of Credit Suisse Group AG's units in Japan.
