Japan resumes aid to Russian-held islands

NEMURO, Japan - Japan resumed providing humanitarian aid to the residents of Russian-held islands off Hokkaido it claims on Jan. 20. A ship carrying 9.4 million yen worth of supplies prepared by a Japanese group departed from Nemuro, Hokkaido, for the islands the same day. The assistance was halted in January 2001 due to its link to a scandal involving Japanese lawmaker Muneo Suzuki.
