Summer products going like hot cakes due to heat wave

TOKYO, Japan - With Japan caught in a record-breaking spell of heat, sales of air conditioners, beer and other seasonal products are soaring, forcing makers to shorten or give up summer holidays to keep up with demand. Although sales of air conditioners usually start to decline in mid-July, they ''show no signs of abating even in August this year,'' the Japan Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Association.

According to the government's Forestry Agency, this year's harvest of homegrown matsutake mushrooms -- a delicacy in Japan -- is likely to hit the lowest level in more than 50 years due to the sizzling heat wave in August, and large matsutake mushrooms have fetched 15,000 yen to 20,000 yen apiece.
