Antique gold coins to be sold

TOKYO, Japan - Photo taken in May 2000 show a 20 yen gold coin issued in 1906. The Finance Ministry said Sept. 24 it will sell 32,683 old gold coins issued between 1871 and 1932 in a manner to be determined by a study panel so as to minimize the adverse effect on the market for antique coins. Proceeds from the sale will be brought into the ministry's general account.

              TOKYO, Japan - Matsutake mushrooms on sale at a grocery store outside the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo. According to the government's Forestry Agency, this year's harvest of homegrown matsutake mushrooms -- a delicacy in Japan -- is likely to hit the lowest level in more than 50 years due to the sizzling heat wave in August, and large matsutake mushrooms have fetched 15,000 yen to 20,000 yen apiece. In this photo, a large matsutake grown in Iwate carries a 22,000 yen price tag, 23,100 yen after the 5 percent consumption tax is included.

                TOKYO, Japan - The Finance Ministry said on April 17 that it will issue a 5,00 yen commemorative coin (photo) around next March to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of migration of Japanese to Brazil in 1908. The coin's face has a design featuring a Japanese family of three who migrated to Brazil and the reverse side a design of cherry blossoms and coffee beans.

                  TOKYO, Japan - Tanaka Kikinzoku Jewelry K.K. on Sept. 20 unveils to the public a pony made with about 30 kilograms of pure gold to commemorate the birth of Prince Hisahito, who was born Sept. 6 to Princess Kiko and Prince Akishino, the second son of Emperor Akihito. The pony, whose market price is worth 150 million yen, will be sold if there is an order after being displayed at the company's main store in the Ginza shopping district in Tokyo, and outlets in Nagoya, Fukuoka and Osaka.
