TOKYO, Japan - A girl listens to weather information transmitted by Sony Corp.'s AIBO robot from the Internet in an experiment at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Tokyo on Feb. 18. Sony, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. and 16 other manufacturers joined the experiment to test robots' abilities to communicate information from the Internet to humans.

TOKYO, Japan - A device to read electronic books is shown off at a news conference at the head office on Kodansha Ltd. in Tokyo on Nov. 13. Sony Corp., Kodansha and 13 other companies have set up a joint venture to provide paid electronic publishing services to member customers. The new firm, Publishing link Ltd., will start distributing books over the Internet from spring 2004.

Sony's AIBO robots able to send images to cell phones

TOKYO, Japan - A system enabling Sony Corp.'s AIBO robot pet (L) to transmit images to mobile phones is demonstrated at the ''Wireless Japan 2003'' exhibition in Tokyo that runs through July 18. MHI unveils 'Wakamaru' robot to support elderly, sick people

TOKYO, Japan - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (MHI) unveiled on Feb. 4 a human-sized ''Wakamaru'' robot (photo) capable of helping elderly people living alone or sick people report to their families living in other areas in the event of emergencies. Measuring 1 meter in height and weighing 30 kilograms, the robot can recognize about 10,000 words and conduct simple conversations. The company plans to put the robot on sale as early as in April next year.

Remote-controlled robot operates power shovel

TSUKUBA, Japan - A human-shaped remote-controlled robot operates a power shovel at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, on Dec. 19. The robot, jointly developed by the institute, Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. and Tokyu Construction Co., is expected to play an active role in restoration work at disaster-hit areas.

Kawasaki Heavy develops robot sensory remote control system

TOKYO, Japan - A researcher operates a prototype remote control system for a humanoid robot that Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. has developed. The heavy machinery maker said on March 26 that the system allows operators to feel as if they are inside the robot and the remote control apparatus will enable them to control the robots effectively at disaster sites.

Sony expects to sell 60,000 Aibo pet robots by year-end

TOKYO, Japan - Toshitada Doi, president of Sony Corp.'s Digital Creatures Laboratory, smiles with an ''Aibo'' pet robot in arms at a Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan press luncheon Nov. 7. He said the company expects to sell at least 60,000 units of the new-version pet robot by the end of the year.
