Nagoya Castle 'shachihoko' statues come down to earth

NAGOYA, Japan - Photo shows one of a pair of golden ''shachihoko'' statues from the top of Nagoya Castle that were brought to the ground for the first time in 21 years March 3 for a Nagoya Castle exhibition to coincide with the Aichi Expo, which runs from March 25 to Sept. 25. The statues will be displayed at a Nagoya Castle exhibition to be held inside the castle for three months starting March 19.

Late summer heat hits Sapporo, mercury tops 31 C

SAPPORO, Japan - A late summer heat wave hits Sapporo on Sept. 21, with the temperature soaring to 31.1 C in late morning. According to the Sapporo weather observatory, this is the first time since weather observations began in 1879 that the temperature topped 30 C this late in the summer. The previous record was logged 86 years ago, on Sept. 18, 1921, when the mercury in Sapporo touched 30.1 C. The photo shows a mother and her two children having lunch at Odori Park in central Sapporo.

Aichi Expo packed with visitors

NAGAKUTE, Japan - The Nagakute main site of the 2005 World Exposition in Aichi Prefecture is packed with visitors on Sept. 24, the day before the 185-day event comes to an end on Sept. 25.
