Yasukuni Shrine returns monument to Korean people

TOKYO, Japan - The Bukgwandaecheopbi monument at Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo, which was built in memory of Korean Admiral Li Sun Sin who fought against Japanese expeditions launched by warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598) to conquer Korea in the late 1590s, was returned to South Korea on Oct. 12. The monument had been kept at the shrine after Japanese forces brought it to Japan during the 1904-1905 Russo-Japanese War.

S. Korean daily rethinks March 12 'Japan Sinks' headline

SEOUL, South Korea - Photo shows page from Dec. 27, 2011 edition of the South Korean daily JoongAng Ilbo, on which is pictured two versions of the newspaper's front page from March 12, 2011, the day after a massive earthquake and tsunami devastated northeastern Japan. On the left is the front page as it appeared that day, bearing the headline ''Japan Sinks.'' On the right is the page as the newspaper now believes it should have appeared, with the headline ''Cheer Up, Japan.'' The daily said the original headline was inspired by a famous Japanese science fiction novel entitled ''Japan Sinks,'' about an earthquake destroying Japan. The JoongAng Ilbo said it received complaints, and now believes the headlined was inappropriate.

SEOUL, South Korea - People from Miyazaki Prefecture in southwestern Japan stage the ''Shiwasu Matsuri,'' a 1,300-year-old local festival derived from a folk tale about an ancient state's royal family on the Korean Peninsula, on the last day of the ''Nikkan Koryu Omatsuri'' (Japan-South Korean Exchange Festival) in Seoul on Oct. 3, 2010.

Nonfiction writer Kamisaka dies at 78

TOKYO, Japan - Fuyuko Kamisaka (file photo), an award-winning nonfiction writer and outspoken conservative critic, died on April 14. She was 78. She was known for her works on Japanese history during and after World War II, including ''Keishu Nazare-en'' on a facility in South Korea where aged Japanese widows of South Korean men reside.

Yasukuni OK'd enshrining Class-A war criminals in 1969

TOKYO, Japan - The Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo crowded with people going there to offer prayers. According to a book released by the National Diet Library on March 28, the Shrine gave a green light in 1969 to the idea of its enshrining Japanese Class-A war criminals from World War II, nine years before it actually did so, and the government was more closely involved in discussions regarding whom the shrine should honor than currently believed.

Singers of Japan, S. Korea sign friendship accord

TOKYO, Japan - Japanese singer Peggy Hayama (L), a member of a Japanese singers' association, and O Yong Nok, an official of its South Korean counterpart, exchange flags in Tokyo on Oct. 24 after the two associations signed a friendship agreement to deepen cultural exchanges. South Korea decided in June to further ease its ban on cultural imports from Japan.
