Korean residents lose appeal to seek disability benefits

OSAKA, Japan - Hearing-impaired Korean residents of Japan head to the Osaka High Court on Oct. 27. The court threw out an appeal filed by seven Korean residents who sought redress for being refused disability pensions even after a nationality clause was removed from the National Pension Law.

Court rejects appeal over fatal car accident caused in police chase

SENDAI, Japan - Plaintiffs walk to the Sendai High Court on Feb. 27. The court upheld a lower court ruling and rejected the 135 million yen damages suit filed against Iwate Prefecture by the bereaved families of a couple who were killed in 1999 when a car chased by the prefectural police crashed into their car.

High court rejects AUM founder Asahara's objection to ruling

TOKYO, Japan - The Tokyo High Court has rejected an objection filed by the defense team for AUM Shinrikyo founder Shoko Asahara (in a photo taken in September 1995) against the court's March 27 decision to dismiss their appeal against his death sentence two years and three months ago, judicial sources said on May 30. The decision paves the way for Asahara's death sentence to stand since the Supreme Court is unlikely to overrule unless any violation of the Constitution or a precedent can be found in the high court decision.

OSAKA, Japan - Prosecutors walk into the Osaka District Court on May 27 to attend the trial of Mitsuru Asada, former chairman of meat packer Hannan Corp., who was indicted for swindling the government out of more than 5 billion yen by abusing a state beef buyback program established to calm concerns over mad cow disease. The court sentenced Asada to seven years in prison.

OSAKA, Japan - Kwak Kwi Hoon, 78, a Korean survivor of the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima, walks into the Osaka High Court on Dec. 5. The court rejected the state's appeal and upheld an earlier lower court ruling ordering the central and Osaka prefectural governments to pay a medical allowance to an atomic bomb survivor living abroad. It is the first high court ruling to recognize that atomic-bomb survivors or ''hibakusha'' living abroad are eligible to receive the allowance based on the Atomic Bomb Victims Relief Law on the same terms as those living in Japan.

Justice Ministry releases 3 Afghan asylum seekers temporarily

OSAKA, Japan - The Justice Ministry's West Japan Immigration Bureau on Oct. 29 temporarily released Abdul Aziz (R) and two other Afghan asylum seekers who have been detained at a facility in Ibaraki, Osaka Prefecture, for violations of the immigration law. In September, Aziz had his refugee status recognized by the Hiroshima High Court. The two others have been denied refugee status by the ministry and are appealing their cases at district courts in Hiroshima and Nagoya.
