Shanghai consular staffer killed self, Japan protests to China
SHANGHAI, China - Photo taken in May 2005 shows the premises of the Japanese Consulate General in Shanghai. The Japanese government on Dec. 28 acknowledged that a staff member at the consulate general committed suicide in May 2004, saying it has lodged protests with China over the death. ''Behind this (death) is what is believed to be regrettable action by local Chinese security authorities'' in violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, Yoshinori Katori, press secretary for the Japanese Foreign Ministry, said without elaborating.
