Prince Tomohito recurs cancer, to undergo surgery on Mon.

TOKYO, Japan - Prince Tomohito of Mikasa (in file photo), a cousin of Emperor Akihito, developed cancer in the throat and will undergo a surgery on Feb. 29 at the National Cancer Center in Tokyo, the Imperial Household Agency said on Feb. 14. The 60-year-old prince was diagnosed as early cancer after signs of cancer in the oropharynx were found during a regular checkup held Feb. 7 at the center, the agency said.

Imperial Palace's inner gardens open to the public

TOKYO, Japan - A group of visitors stroll through the inner gardens of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo in a guided tour for the elderly people on Sept. 13. The Imperial Household Agency opens the 25-hectare Fukiage gardens twice a year, once in May mainly for children and once around Respect for the Aged Day for people aged over 70. Deities restored to quake-reinforced Imperial Palace shrines

TOKYO, Japan - Shinto priests and employees of the Imperial Household Agency dressed in Shinto costumes carry the deities of the imperial family back to the three earthquake-reinforced shrines from a makeshift shrine inside the Imperial Palace on March 25. Emperor may have bone loss from cancer therapy: officials

TOKYO, Japan - Emperor Akihito (file photo) has shown signs of bone-thinning osteoporosis due to hormone therapy for prostate cancer, Imperial Household Agency officials said Feb. 25. The emperor, 74, underwent prostate cancer surgery in January 2003.

Professor of Chinese philosophy Seiichi Uno dies at 97

TOKYO, Japan - Seiichi Uno (file photo), a professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo and a leading scholar in Chinese philosophy, died Jan. 7 of old age at his home in Tokyo, his family said Jan. 8. He was 97. Uno, a Tokyo native, was a member of the National Language Council and one of the scholars delegated by the government to name the current imperial era (Heisei) following the end of the Showa era after the death in January 1989 of Emperor Hirohito, who is posthumously known as Emperor Showa.
