Big underground floodway completed in eastern Saitama

SAITAMA, Japan - The Land, Infrastructure and Transport Ministry held a ceremony at Kasukabe in Saitama Prefecture on June 10 to open one of the world's largest underground flood control channels expected to drastically reduce flood damage in low-lying eastern Saitama Prefecture. The photo, taken with a fisheye lens, shows lasers simulating about 100,000 tons of flood water rising to the height of about 10 meters inside the tank.

          FUKUOKA, Japan - The ''Super Eco-Ship'' tanker Nadeshiko Maru, an environmentally friendly vessel that is driven by electric motors, was launched in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture on Sept. 11. The 749-ton oil tanker, built with assistance from the Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology Agency, uses a contra-rotating propulsion system driven by two electric motors, with electricity supplied by four generators. Compared with diesel engine ships, the design supposedly improves energy efficiency and reduces the emission of carbon dioxide by about 10 percent.

                TOKYO, Japan - Central and local government officials walk inside the world's longest land tunnel in Aomori Prefecture on Feb. 27 after a ceremony to blast the last bedrock blocking the 26.5-kilometer railway tunnel. The Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology Agency began constructing the tunnel that connects the Tohoku Shinkansen Line's Hachinohe Station and Shin-Aomori Station in August 1998.

                  TOKYO, Japan - Mitsubishi Motors Corp. (MMC) has developed a fuel-cell vehicle (in photo) equipped with DaimlerChrysler AG's fuel-cell system. MMC said on Sept. 17 it asked the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport for permission to certify the vehicle. The certification would enable MMC to join what the government calls the ''Japan Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Demonstration Project'' and thus test the vehicle with hydrogen refueling infrastructure under actual driving conditions on public roads.
