A 4-meter thermometer is set up in front of a Yagihashi department store on May 14, 2026, in Kumagaya, Saitama Prefecture, known as one of the hottest cities in Japan. The mercury hit 41.1 C in the eastern Japan city in July 2018, the highest temperature on record at that time, before it was surpassed by the nearby city of Isesaki, Gunma Prefecture, at 41.8 C in the summer of 2025.

Strong winds battered Tokyo and Saitama Prefecture on Monday, April 7, prompting the Japan Meteorological Agency to issue a wind advisory for parts of the area. A wildfire that was initially contained after breaking out in Chichibu, western Saitama, on Wednesday, February 4, expanded to 40 hectares after reigniting Thursday night. Japan: Nationwide Protests Erupt Against Immigration Policies, Counter-Protests Reported 4

Protests against the government's immigration policies, including the expansion of foreign worker acceptance and the provision of welfare to foreigners, were held in over 15 cities across Japan on Sunday, October 26. The largest gathering, which drew over 1,000 people, according to X posts, took place in Osaka, with active protests also reported in Tokyo, Fukuoka, and Nagoya.
