High court rejects state appeal, raises damages over base noise

TOKYO, Japan - Plaintiffs and their supporters applaud after the Tokyo High Court ordered the state to pay more than 4 billion yen in damages over aircraft noise to residents around Atsugi base in Kanagawa Prefecture which is jointly used by the U.S. Navy and Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force.

MSDF seaman's suicide

TOKYO, Japan - The mother of a crewmember of a Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer answers a reporter's question in front of the Tokyo High Court in Tokyo on April 23, 2014, after the court ordered the Japanese government and a former MSDF officer to pay some 73 million yen in damages for the seaman's suicide in 2004, significantly more than the 4.4 million yen awarded in a lower court ruling. The high court said the suicide was predictable and could have been avoided, based on investigation documents, which detailed the assaults and threats on the seaman.

Court rejects suit against Yasukuni enshrinement

The branch upheld the same day a lower court decision to reject the suit by five Okinawa Prefecture citizens, who asked the central government and the Shinto shrine to delist their 10 deceased relatives' enshrinement at the shrine and to pay a total of 500,000 yen in damages for mental pain they claim to have suffered from the enshrinement.
