Narita airport holds ceremony over extending shorter runway

The transport ministry decided Aug. 4 to extend the second runway of the airport to increase the flight slot capacity by stretching northward (upper direction) to 2,500 meters, extending in the opposite direction from the initial plan because of opposition by some landowners (C).

          HAKODATE, Japan - Land, infrastructure and transport minister Kazuo Kitagawa (2nd from L) and Hokkaido Gov. Harumi Takahashi (2nd from R) kick off work to build a shinkansen bullet-train line linking the islands of Honshu and Hokkaido in a ceremony at Ono Town, Hokkaido, on May 22.
