Int'l transport security confab to open in Tokyo

TOKYO, Japan - Japanese Land, Infrastructure and Transport Minister Kazuo Kitagawa speaks at the opening session of a two-day Ministerial Conference on International Transport Security that began in Tokyo on Jan. 12 to discuss ways to stem terror attacks on public transport systems such as railways, ships and aircraft. The 14 participating countries consist of the G-8 industrialized nations -- Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States -- plus China, South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia.

Runway extension approved for Narita airport

The transport ministry decided Aug. 4 to extend the second runway of the airport to increase the flight slot capacity by stretching northward (upper direction) to 2,500 meters, extending in the opposite direction from the initial plan because of opposition by some landowners (C).

Work starts on Aomori-Hakodate bullet-train line

HAKODATE, Japan - Land, infrastructure and transport minister Kazuo Kitagawa (2nd from L) and Hokkaido Gov. Harumi Takahashi (2nd from R) kick off work to build a shinkansen bullet-train line linking the islands of Honshu and Hokkaido in a ceremony at Ono Town, Hokkaido, on May 22. The new line due for completion will cut the rail travel time between Tokyo and Hakodate in Hokkaido to three hours and 40 minutes, about two hours shorter than now.

NARITA, Japan - Crews begin work April 17 on part of a new runway for Narita airport, Chiba Prefecture, near lands owned by six farmers who oppose its construction (foreground). Some 230 workers began erecting 3-meter-tall fences at two locations around construction sites.
