Ex-DPJ lawmaker sentenced to suspended 2-year prison term

NAGOYA, Japan - The Nagoya District Court on Dec. 16 sentences former Democratic Party of Japan lawmaker Kenji Kobayashi (file photo) to two years in prison, suspended for three years, for stimulant drug possession and use. Kobayashi was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2000 and was reelected in 2003. He lost his Diet seat in the Sept. 11 general election. (Kyodo)

DPJ's Nishimura arrested for violating Attorneys Law

OSAKA, Japan - Shingo Nishimura, a House of Representatives member of the opposition Democratic Party of Japan, leaves his home in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, on Nov. 28 to head for the Osaka prefectural police headquarters. Nishimura was later arrested for allegedly allowing a former employee at his law office to use his name as a lawyer in violation of the Attorneys Law.

Swindler Tomobe gets longest-ever jail term for lawmaker

TOKYO, Japan - House of Councillors member Tatsuo Tomobe (file photo) faces 10 years in prison, the heaviest punishment ever imposed on a lawmaker, after the Supreme Court rejected his appeal in a 1994-1996 swindling case. The Tokyo High Court last Dec. 20 ruled that Tomobe swindled 660 million yen, in a conspiracy with relatives, from 35 people in connection with management of a mutual aid society from 1994 to 1996. Tomobe, 72, elected in 1995, will also lose his upper house seat.

Ex-head of Shinwa bank gets 4-yr jail sentence for loans

TOKYO, Japan - A file photo shows former President Toru Tsujita of Shinwa Bank in Nagasaki Prefecture, who was sentenced by the Tokyo District Court on Feb. 7 to four years in prison for misusing 6.5 billion yen in bank funds. Tsujita, 74, was charged with conspiring to loan money to a Tokyo cosmetic company run by Yoshimasa Soejima, as well as two other companies from July 1993 to June 1995 with the foreknowledge that the money was not likely to be recovered. Soejima, 56, was also sentenced to three years and eight months in prison.

Ex-lawmaker Koyama indicted in KSD scandal

TOKYO, Japan - Former House of Councillors member Takao Koyama (file photo) is indicted Feb. 6 on charges of accepting 20 million yen in bribes from the scandal-hit mutual-aid foundation KSD. Koyama left the ruling Liberal Democratic Party on Jan. 16 and quit as a lawmaker Jan. 29.

Former lawmaker Nakajima found hanged at home

TOKYO, Japan - Former House of Representatives lawmaker Yojiro Nakajima (file photo), who was convicted of vote-buying and fraud, was found hanged at his home in Tokyo's Meguro Ward on Jan. 6. Nakajima, 41, was given a two-year prison term last September for defrauding the state of about 10 million yen, money that was given to him from tax funds to pay for a secretary. He had appealed the Tokyo High Court decision to the Supreme Court.

High court cuts prison term for ex-lawmaker Nakajima

Lawmaker Yamamoto arrested for alleged fraud

Yamamoto, 37, who represents Tokyo's No. 21 electoral district, has denied the allegation, investigative sources said. He left the DPJ shortly before his arrest.
