NEC, NTT develop robot helping parents monitor kids at remote sites

TOKYO, Japan - NEC Corp. and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. said on Oct. 25 they have jointly developed a robot to enable parents to watch over children at remote locations via Net-linked video cameras and instruct it on how to care for them via Net-linked cellphones. The two firms said that they will test the robot at two nursing schools in Tokyo and Minami-Alps, Yamanashi Prefecture, from November to the year-end, with an eye to applying it to commercial use in view of the growing need to protect children from crimes and accidents while parents are away.
