Ceremony marks 50th anniversary of Japan's 1st Antarctic mission

TOKYO, Japan - Former members of Japan's Antarctic expeditions throw colored paper streamers from the retired icebreaker Soya in Tokyo on Nov. 8 during a ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of Japan's first Antarctic expedition. The Soya, which made six trips to the Antarctic between 1956 and 1962, is now moored at a museum in Tokyo's Daiba seafront district.

Japan's last MSDF ship returns from refueling mission

TOKYO, Japan - After completing a four-month mission to refuel vessels of U.S.-led coalition forces in the Indian Ocean, the 8,150-ton Maritime Self-Defense Force supply ship Tokiwa berths at Narumi pier in Tokyo on Nov. 23, as families of the crew members await the return of their loved ones. TOKYO, Japan - The 11,600-ton icebreaker Shirase leaves Harumi pier at Tokyo Port on Nov. 14 on its 49th Antarctic expedition, which is also the icebreaker's last mission before it is decommissioned after its return to Japan next spring.

TOKYO, Japan - The Japanese icebreaker Shirase leaves Harumi dock in Tokyo on Nov. 14 for its 48th Antarctic expedition, marking the 50th anniversary of Japan's initial exploration of the continent. The 11,600-ton exploration ship is expected to arrive at Japan's Showa Base in Antarctica in mid-December and return to Japan next spring.

Members of Antarctic expeditions to hold reunion in Himalayas

5 ships sail from Yamaguchi for 'research whaling'

SHIMONOSEKI, Japan - The 7,575-ton mother-ship Nissin Maru leaves Shimonoseki port in Yamaguchi Prefecture on Nov. 8 for ''research whaling'' in the Antarctic Ocean, with family members of its crew seeing them off. The Nissin Maru, with four other ships, will conduct the mission for six months.
