Damages suit by war-displaced people rejected again

NAGOYA, Japan - With plaintiffs and their supporters standing in the background, a member of the defense counsel puts up a ''unjust verdict'' banner outside the Nagoya District Court in Nagoya on March 29 after the court turned down a damages suit filed by a group of war-displaced people who claimed the Japanese government failed to swiftly repatriate them from China after the end of World War II and provide adequate support after they came home.

Court rescinds Hiroshima decision on A-bomb survivors

HIROSHIMA, Japan - Karou Sumisaka, 68, head of a group of seven plaintiffs claiming to be atomic-bomb survivors, smiles at a meeting of the plaintiffs and supporters in Hiroshima on March 25 after winning their case. Japanese destroyer visits China, first since World War II

Asbestos victims file suit against state, manufacturers

TOKYO, Japan - Plaintiffs, including construction workers with asbestos-linked diseases and family members of deceased workers, head to the Tokyo District Court on May 16. About 170 people filed a lawsuit against the state and construction material manufacturers the same day, demanding 6.6 billion yen in damages. OSAKA, Japan - Nobel Prize-winning novelist Kenzaburo Oe speaks at a news conference in Osaka on March 28 after the Osaka District Court rejected a damage suit filed against him and Iwanami Shoten Publishers over his 1970 essay ''Okinawa Notes.'' The court dismissed two plaintiffs' claim that Oe wrongly stated in his book that military officers ordered civilians in Okinawa Prefecture to commit mass suicide in the closing days of World War II. Court upholds guilty verdict for health official over AIDS death

TOKYO, Japan - Ryuhei Kawada, an independent member of the House of Councillors who was one of the plaintiffs in HIV damages suits, welcomed Japan's Supreme Court decision on March 4 over an AIDS patient's death. The top court upheld the same day a suspended prison sentence for Akihito Matsumura, a former senior health ministry official who was convicted for failing to prevent the use of HIV-contaminated blood products in the 1980s that resulted in the death of the patient.

Nobel laureate Oe believes military order behind mass suicides

OSAKA, Japan - Nobel Prize-winning novelist Kenzaburo Oe arrives at the Osaka District Court on Nov. 9 to testify in a hearing on a suit filed against him. Yutaka Umezawa, 90, who was the garrison commander on Zamami Island in the Okinawa island chain during World War II, is seeking to halt the publication of three books by Oe which Umezawa argues wrongly state that military officers on Zamami and Tokashiki islands in Okinawa Prefecture ordered civilians to commit mass suicide in 1945 during the Battle of Okinawa.
