Veteran Fukuda elected LDP chief to be Japan's new leader after Abe

TOKYO, Japan - Former Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukuda stands up after being elected president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party to succeed embattled Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at a meeting of the LDP lawmakers at the party headquarters in Tokyo on Sept. 23. Fukuda, 71, took 330 of the 528 votes, beating his sole rival, LDP Secretary General Taro Aso, 67, who got 197 votes.
