Project to build new Shinkansen station in Shiga canceled

OTSU, Japan - Shiga Gov. Yukiko Kada (standing at center) speaks at a meeting of officials from Ritto city, Shiga Prefecture, and neighboring municipalities in Otsu on Oct. 28. Local governments agreed to formally cancel a project to build a new station in Ritto, between Kyoto and Maibara stations on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line. Since taking office in 2006, Kada has pushed a campaign to cancel the project due to the heavy financial burden.
