Union abandons meeting after hotel refuses venue

TOKYO, Japan - Yasuo Morikoshi, president of the Japan Teachers Union, speaks at a news conference in Tokyo on Feb. 1 about the cancellation of the union's general meeting. The union originally planned to hold the meeting at the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa in Minato Ward from Feb. 2 to 4 but the hotel, despite court orders, has refused to honor a contract to provide a venue on fear of protests by rightist groups.

        Kubota chief Masumoto found dead

        TOKYO, Japan - Photo taken in 2012 shows Yasuo Masumoto, chairman and president of Kubota Corp., Japan's leading manufacturer of farm equipment. On June 4, 2014, Masumoto was found dead at a hotel in Tokyo. He was 67. Police are investigating the cause of his death. Vice President Masatoshi Kimata will take over as acting president, Kubota said.

          TOKYO, Japan - Some 12,000 electric bulbs light up a 13-meter-high Christmas tree in front of the main entrance of the Hotel New Otani in Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward on Oct. 26 two months ahead of Christmas. The tree will be lit up from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. every day until Dec. 25.
