U.S. expert in Japan calls conspiracy charge on Miura unfair

MORIOKA, Japan - William Cleary (photo), a California lawyer and associate professor of law at Iwate University, said March 13 he will submit an affidavit to a Californian court that it is unfair to prosecute Japanese national Kazuyoshi Miura on the charge of conspiracy which does not exist in Japan's legal system.

                    Judge to mull motion to quash arrest warrant without Miura presen

                    SAIPAN, Northern Mariana Islands - Photo shows Japanese businessman Kazuyoshi Miura (L) shaking hands with Bruce Berline, who is serving as Miura's chief attorney on Saipan, on May 10. A judge at a Los Angeles court said May 9 he will hear arguments on a motion to quash an arrest warrant for Miura, who is accused of conspiring to have his wife murdered, without Miura being present in the courtroom. Miura, 60, was arrested on Saipan in February on charges of murder and conspiracy in connection with the 1981 shooting in Los Angeles of his wife Kazumi, then 28. Miura was charged in Japan for his wife's death and convicted of murder in 1994. But the Supreme Court overturned the verdict in 2003. (Kyodo)
