Emperor, empress inspect Niigata earthquake reconstruction work
NAGAOKA, Japan - Emperor Akihito (R, front) and Empress Michiko (C, back) chat with residents of Nagaoka city and other adjacent communities in Niigata Prefecture on Sept. 9 during a visit to Nagaoka to inspect post-earthquake reconstruction work in the area. The central Niigata region was hit by a magnitude-6.8 earthquake in October 2004 that killed 68 people, injured 4,805 and damaged 16,000 houses. (
