Panel OKs plan to raise sales tax from FY 2011 at earliest

TOKYO, Japan - Prime Minister Taro Aso speaks during a meeting of the Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy at the prime minister's office on Dec. 16. At right is Economic and Fiscal Policy Minister Kaoru Yosano. The panel endorsed a plan to raise the nation's consumption tax from fiscal 2011 at the earliest and to amend legislation to lay the groundwork for the tax increase in 2010.
