Taiwan starts handing out consumer vouchers to lift economy
TAIPEI, Taiwan - A shop in a market on Di Hua street in Taipei, crowded with people shopping to prepare for Lunar New Year holidays, puts up a sign welcoming consumers using consumer vouchers the Taiwan government started handing out on Jan. 18. The government began distributing $2.5 billion in consumer vouchers to its 23 million citizens in a bid to stimulate the island's lagging economy amid the global financial crisis.
