U.S. envoy visits Okinawa peace park

NAHA, Japan - U.S. Ambassador to Japan John Roos (C) lays flowers at the Cornerstone of Peace in the Peace Memorial Park in Itoman, Okinawa Prefecture, on Nov. 30, 2009. Roos visited the southernmost prefecture, the only inhabited area of Japan where ground battles took place during World War II, for the first time since assuming his post in August.

Okinawa Gov. Denny Tamaki in a "peace declaration" said Russia's invasion of Ukraine evoked memories of the conflict in the southern island prefecture while pledging to "continue efforts to abolish nuclear weapons and renounce war, so that Okinawa will never become a battlefield again."
