'Lucky' radish served at Kyoto temple

KYOTO, Japan - Japanese ''daikon'' radish soup is served to visitors at Sembonshakado Temple in Kyoto on Dec. 7, 2009, as part of the annual ''daikodaki'' event to drive away evil with the advent of cold weather. Some 5,000 daikon were prepared for cooking in four pots each measuring 1-meter in diameter, and served to visitors for 1,000 yen a bowl.

Hitachi Zosen unveils world's biggest shield tunneling machine

OSAKA, Japan - Hitachi Zosen Corp. shows to the press on Dec. 25, 2012, what it claims to be the world's largest shield tunneling machine at its Sakai plant in Osaka Prefecture. The 110-meter-long machine with a diameter of 17.45 meters and weighing some 7,000 tons will be used to drill a 2,800-meter tunnel in Seattle in the U.S. state of Washington to replace an aging elevated highway, the company said.

World's 1st laptop made by Toshiba

KDDI unveils new mobile phone brand in tie-up with designers

Japanese fishermen head off to Russian waters to gather kelp

KUSHIRO, Japan - A fleet of Japanese fishing boats head toward the Russian-held Kaigara island off northeastern Hokkaido on June 1 to gather kelp, a giant seaweed extensively used in Japanese cooking. Sent off by their families who gathered at Cape Nosappu, about 250 Hokkaido fishing boats set off for the kelp grounds, about 3.7 kilometers away from Nosappu. Japanese fishermen paid 97.6 million yen to Russian authorities this year for the kelp-gathering rights. The amount of kelp to be gathered this season is set at 4,000 tons.
