Huge image of tiger laid out in Ibaraki Pref. national park

HITACHINAKA, Japan - A huge image of a tiger, made of pine cones, is laid out on Dec. 20, 2009, at the National Hitachi Seaside Park in Hitachinaka, Ibaraki Prefecture, which visitors can view by riding on the park's Ferris wheel. The park asked visitors to collect fallen pine cones in the park and to put them in wooden frames laid out to depict a tiger in recognition of 2010 as the year of the tiger in the Eastern zodiac.

        MITO, Japan - Flowering plum trees at the Kairakuen plum park in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, which marked the opening of this year's plum blossom festival on Feb. 20. Kairakuen, one of the largest plum-tree parks in Japan, boasts 3,000 plum trees of some 100 species. Cold weather has delayed the blossoming at Kairakuen this year, and only a fraction of the plum trees there have blossomed. The peak blossom-viewing time will be from early to mid-March. The plum blossom festival will run through March 31.
