Pro-U.S. base incumbent mayor Shimabukuro loses

NAGO, Japan - Incumbent Nago Mayor Yoshikazu Shimabukuro, who expressed willingness to accept the existing plan to construct a new U.S. base in the city of Nago, Okinawa Prefecture, speaks to reporters after media projections said he would lose the Jan. 24, 2010, mayoral race. Shimabukuro's loss made it unlikely that the small city would accept the U.S. Marine Corps' Futemma Air Station in another part of the prefecture.
