Man apparently kills self after questioning over woman's body

MAIZURU, Japan - Kyoto prefectural police officers examine a car in Maizuru, Kyoto Prefecture, on May 18, 2010, in which a 39-year-old man was found dead following questioning over the death of Tsuyuko Uno, whose body was discovered in a plastic bag last month in Takatsuki, Osaka Prefecture. The man, Uno's adoptive father, apparently killed himself, according to police.

Sales of Sharp's TV mobile phones top 5 million in 17 months

OSAKA, Japan - Sales of Sharp Corp.'s TV-equipped mobile phones (photo) have topped 5 million units in Japan since the first models hit the market in May last year, the company said Nov. 2. Overall, domestic shipments of TV mobile phones by all domestic makers totaled 13.2 million units as of the end of August, according to Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association. Sharp, the industry leader, says it will start shipping thinner TV mobile phones later this month that measure 18 millimeters in thickness, 5 mm thinner than the thinnest available models.

Fishing boat cut in two, capsizes after collision with freighter

OSAKA, Japan - A 4.3-ton fishing boat is cut in two and capsizes after colliding with the 6,395-ton Panamanian freighter Mighty Dandy in the Seto Inland Sea off Kagawa Prefecture on May 7. Two people on the fishing boat were thrown into the sea, and one of them -- a 46-year-old woman -- was missing. The skipper of the fishing boat was rescued by a Japan Coast Guard vessel which happened to be near the scene, officials said.

FUKUOKA, Japan - Ryoshichi Umezu, the 78-year-old father of a murder victim, Chika Matsumoto, expressed dissatisfaction in Fukuoka Prefecture on Jan. 24 after a Chinese court earlier in the day sentenced a Chinese man to death but spared the life of another after finding them guilty of the 2003 murders of a family of four in the Japanese prefecture. The two Chinese, formerly students in Japan, were sentenced for killing Chika, her husband and clothing dealer Shinjiro, their son Kai and daughter Hina. The second man was given a life term.
