Nissan's EV Leaf

YOKOHAMA, Japan - Nissan Motor Co. unveils the Leaf electric vehicle at its head office in Yokohama on Dec. 3, 2010. The automaker plans to begin sales of the EV, which Nissan describes as 100 percent electric and zero-emission, on Dec. 20 in Japan, later in the month in the United States and in early 2011 in Europe.

The No. 3 unit has already been suspended for regular checkups and the No.4 unit was halted the previous day following a request by the government to suspend the whole plant as a precautionary measure in view of the probability of a powerful earthquake striking the region on an active major fault line.

Nissan only delivers 60 of 6,000 orders for electric vehicle

Nissan officials said Jan. 17, 2011, the company has only delivered about 60 units of the vehicle in Japan as of Jan. 14 even though it has already taken 6,000 orders due to be sold by March 31. Nissan attributed the slow pace to the need for careful work in the manufacturing process but denied any delay of the delivery of the pre-ordered cars.

Prius sets sales record

Industry data showed Jan. 11, 2011 that the vehicle sold 315,669 units in Japan in 2010, breaking the nation's annual sales record for a single model for the first time in 20 years. The previous record was 300,008 unit sales posted by Toyota's Corolla in 1990.
