Hamaoka nuclear plant shut down

NAGOYA, Japan - A display in the head office of Chubu Electric Power Co. in Nagoya, central Japan, at 10:23 a.m. on May 14, 2011, indicates output of the No. 5 reactor (H5) at the Hamaoka nuclear power plant in Shizuoka Prefecture falling to zero. The No. 3 unit has already been suspended for regular checkups and the No.4 unit was halted the previous day following a request by the government to suspend the whole plant as a precautionary measure in view of the probability of a powerful earthquake striking the region on an active major fault line.
