Salmon species 'kunimasu' rediscovered

KYOTO, Japan - Kyoto University professor Tetsuji Nakabo holds a kunimasu, an indigenous freshwater salmon species thought to have become extinct more than 70 years ago, in Kyoto on Dec. 15, 2010. The fish, which was previously only seen in Lake Tazawa in Akita Prefecture, was discovered in Lake Saiko, Yamanashi Prefecture, as the eggs of the fish were taken to Lake Saiko before the species was believed to have become extinct.

KYOTO, Japan - A Kyoto University researcher holds a chemically processed transparent specimen of a bluegill caught in Lake Biwa, Shiga Prefecture, western Japan, on Dec. 17, 2014. His team started selling in September specimens of alien fish caught in the lake as accessories by coloring and hardening the fishbone with resin in a campaign to protect the lake's ecosystem.

Prehistory fish fossils found as new freshwater species

KANAZWA, Japan - The education board in Hakusan, Ishikawa Prefecture, displays fossils of a new freshwater fish species of the Sinamia family unearthed from a stratum in the first half of the Cretaceous period, or 130 million years ago, in the Sea of Japan city on Oct. 1, 2014. The board has given the scientific name of Sinamia Kukurihime to the fish after the name of a local shrine.

1st freshwater-bred bluefin tuna auctioned in Japan
